The main thing for holidaymakers to consider, when choosing where to stay, is that Lanzarote has strict building regulations.

This is thanks to the tireless works of preservationist Cesar Manrique.

His artistic designs are found all around the island and his house is now one of the tourist attractions

Only hotels and Domestic apartments are normally above 2 floors.

The Hotels are not numerous, all are extremely well appointed and only one is a tower (in the Capital of Arrecife).

Most of the high profile tourist areas are in the South and East of Lanzarote.

Both Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca are dedicated to the tourist and have many fine hotels and estates but, besides this and because of this, I consider the areas are lacking character.

Some of the Hotels in Playa Blanca have been threatened with demolition as they have not followed the strict building codes.

Arrecife Gran

However, one of the earliest areas was Puerto del Carmen which is a stretch of coastline running South from the airport to the Old Town and harbour of the same name.

This strip of coastline reflects the high standards of the amenities and establishments on Lanzarote. Good class bars, cafes and restaurants, late shopping, clean beaches and no trouble.

Clubs exist but are few and low profile.

Playa Blanca

The buildings are among the earliest built and offer modern experiences in surroundings that do have that character.

Puerto Del Carmen Old Town especially has grown around the harbour just as it would have done if tourists were unknown.

It is here, in a quieter area with wonderful views of the coast and harbour that my apartment lies. Yet it is within easy reach of numerous shops, bars and eateries.
